I don't know why the"pro" at Canadian Tire said you can't test regular batteries with this. All multi-meters can test regular batteries as long as they test for DC voltage and you don't exceed the voltage maximum. That's every multi-meter out there. I suppose it's easier to just pop a battery into one of those "battery testers" instead of holding the test leads to either end of a battery but these testers do so much more than just regular batteries.

Set your dial to the third setting to the left off the off setting,.. that's 20 in dc Voltage range. Your black lead goes to com and your red lead always goes to V, ohm, mA (except for 10 amp dc readings). Touch one lead to one end of the battery and the other lead to the other end of the battery. You should get a reading of 1.50 for a normal battery or 1.2 for a rechargeable battery. If it's much less the battery is pretty much dead or needs recharging. If you get a reading of less than 2.00 on this range, you can set the dial one more notch to the left (the 2 V range) to move the decimal one place over and get a more accurate reading. If you get a minus sign in front of the display, switch your leads on the battery, then the red lead points to the positive of the battery.

My meter say's it takes a 500 mA / 250 V fast blow fuse. It's printed on the label on the back of the meter. Multi-meters use a bypass shunt so that even though it will measure up to 10 Amps DC, only a small fraction of that current is actually going through the meters circuitry. This circuit has a maximum of 500 ma (1/2 Amp).

I didn't check but it *should* be 10a. You can use a lower rated fuse for added protection as long as the tube length is the same.

9V battery. Remove the two Phillips size 1 screws on the back panel and snap the battery carefully on! (those wires are easy to break)

On the back side you remove the two small phillips screws, they are found under the Warning Label, near the top. The cover is slightly tricky to remove, gently pry it up and out of the way. Once inside you will see where the 9 volt battery attaches, carefully line up the proper posts, positive and negative, and they should come together with little force. Then tuck the battery into the compartment also the wires and re-install the cover. I should mention, do not over tighten the little scews as they will strip the threads very easily. OK

Changing or removing batteries

7.1 If the “BAT” shows on the display, the batteries should be replaced.
7.2 Use only flash and correct type batteries to replace the exhausted set.
7.3 Switch the meter to OFF position and remove the test lead from any source of voltage.
7.4 Remove the screw on the battery door of the meter, then remove the battery door.
7.5 Remove the exhausted batteries and insert a pair of new and same type batteries in the right place.
7.6 Replace the battery door and tight the screw.

You can always use your ohmeter setting to test for continuity. This will also tell you how good of a connection you've got by comparing the circuit resistance to the resistance of the test leads touching together. It won't beep or buzz though which would be great to have.

Question

how to use my digital multimeter

answer 1
This one, as with most other multimeters has many functions to do all sorst of testing, but the main testing you would do would probably be testing for AC voltage (household electricity) and DC voltage (batteries).

Basically the red lead gets gets attached to the positive side and the black lead gets attached to the negative side. You also have to ensure you selected the right dial setting otherwise your display won't mean anything.

Best thing to do is to read up on how to use one on the internet. This is a must have tool for anyone doing diagnostic work, or even just checking to see if you have working or dead batteries lying around the house.
