it is perfect for this type of job, normal body fillers are just the "top coat" the you place over the fiberglass body filler to hide any misshaps you may have made. however from the amount i have been using this stuff i have to say if the job is done right the first time then you wont need to use normal body filler to hide anything.

Bondo is not suitable for repairing a plastic bumper. Try 47-5601 instead.

Question

How durable is this

How
strong is this stuff compared to a mat weave + resin.
I'm making a paintball helmet, would this stuff be able to withstand
that kind of abuse? How thick would I have to make it so it's strong
enough to take a paintball traveling @ 200-300 fps?

well to be honest if i were you i would use this as the main shape of the helmet and i would use the mat weave as a second layer for added structure and strength, you can also buy cavalar sheets that you could place between the layers to be safe, i dont know its up to you your the one building it so its your call.

you want something that will last and not chip away after a few months, so i would recomend bondo-glass body filler, it will not rust, rot, and it will not chip away! i have been using this on my cars for ever and its the best thing out there, well next to a body shop lol

This product can be used for that type of application. This Bondo product is designed to be used fibreglass, and is better suited for larger applications (your situation would qualify). Other Bondo products are more suited for smaller holes and general filling.

Bondo Glass Filler does contain short strand glass fibers. However, it is only recommended for holes approximately the size of a dime or smaller. Bondo Glass Filler will perform better over a 2" void than the regular body filler (without glass fibers), but it is definitely not best practice. For example, a body shop would cut out the bad metal and weld in a patch, using filler for final shaping.
Saying that, it would be a better do it yourself repair if the hole was first reinforced from the back with the Bondo Fiberglass Repair Kit (fiberglass mat and polyester resin), then filling the repair with the Bondo Glass Filler on the front.
