Questions & Answers for Coleman Coleman 40W Folding Solar Panel

Question

Does anyone have suggestions as to why this unit is not charging my MotoMaster Eliminator 800A Powerbox?

The Powerbox recharges just fine with its own AC charger but will not take a charge when hooked up to the solar panel using the connector provided.

The panel has been placed in full sun and the indicator light shows that it is providing current.

On my 800 amp booster (Nautilus), i have to turn a switch on to use DC and to charge as well. Maybe you have an on off switch too.

Yes, you can use the battery at the same time. I did this all day today, panel to controller to 12v battery, boondocking with my travel trailer.

Yes. There is a connector box that will combine the barrel connectors used by this panel.
It's a Blue Planet item that is a little hard to find on the Canadian Tire site.

Question

2-6V batteries in series, two panels - my setup?

Can I simply use two systems each with thier own charge controller and run the clips to the outside terminals on the two batteries? Same as running the panels in parallel but without having to splice the wires together and use one charge controller?

Depending on the charge controller. If your charge controller is triggered by voltage (i.e. it turn off at around 14-15 V) Then hooking 2 6V batteries in series is the same as 1 12V battery. You'll only need 1 charge controller over the 2 6V (12V connection). Don't put it half way between the batteries or you'll fry one of them. See my attached picture.

You should look at the Canadian Tire range of 12 Volt batteries, ask for a capacity of 100-120 Ahrs. You can hook as many batteries as you wish to your system, hooking up multiple panels is limited by the size of the solar charge controller. This is normally listed in Amps (7,8.5,10 or 30). You can add a larger controller as you build your system.

This panel is a 12V battery charger. In order to charge or operate devices, a connection through a 12V is necessary, as well as an inverter for 120V AC items.

No. The batteries first need to be connected in parallel. Then the panels need to be connected in parallel and run through on single charge controller.
